Shown in profile, this gentleman is wearing a brown coat with large buttons over a matching waistcoat and frilled chemise, his ‘physical’ wig powdered. This style of wig was the preserve of professional gentlemen, such as doctors and lawyers, during the 1770s.

Finely painted with a stippled background, the navette-shaped portrait is set in a beautiful filigree surround of high caret gold with a later brooch pin fitted to the reverse.
