William Grimaldi

£1,400

This attractive portrait dates to the 1790s and shows a lady of confident gaze set against a cloudy blue sky. With her dark curls upswept, she wears a décolleté cross-over gown with a standing ruffled collar.

The portrait is set in a gold frame, the reverse glazed to show two locks of brown hair laid on cream silk.

William Grimaldi (1751-1830) was descended from the family of Grimaldi of Genoa, the Merovingian Kings of France and the Princes of Monaco. He was therefore well placed to be appointed Miniature Painter to the Duke of York and later to George IV. Grimaldi was trained by his uncle, Thomas Worlidge, and worked for several years in Paris, exhibiting regularly in London. Examples of his work may be found in many prominent collections.
