Peaches & Cream

Richard Cosway

£3,750 - Reserved

Dressed in peach silk with a veiled headdress fastened in a ruffled bow on her neck, this sensitively painted portrait from Richard Cosway’s early years as an artist captures all the romance and gentle elegance of the late eighteenth century. The blue sky background, synonymous with Cosway’s meticulous style, adds a freshness and draws the eye in.

The portrait resides in the original gold frame with a decorative edging and enclosed reverse.

Richard Cosway ranks as one of the greatest miniaturists from the glamourous heyday of miniature painting in Britain. Although his family were not particularly artistic, his natural talent was encouraged from an early age and, having won prizes and early recognition, his studio soon became a magnet for the fashionable and would-be fashionable of London society especially those prominent in the arts. Always flamboyant in his own dress and mannerisms, Cosway was an excellent self-promoter frequenting public events like theatre shows and picture sales just to be seen and admired.
