George Engleheart

£1,700

Despite the fact that George Engleheart recorded the names of close to five thousand sitters in his fee book, this gentleman is now only identifiable by his initials – EC – appearing in a gold monogram on the reverse of the frame. Amongst Engleheart’s sitters were about 300 ladies, gentlemen and children whose surname began with the letter C. Unfortunately Engleheart rarely noted Christian names, not even the initial letter so it has not been possible to identify this gentleman.

Of middle age and wearing a traditional black coat, the sitter also sports a powdered toupée. The portrait resides in the original gold bracelet style frame and would have been a gift to a loved one to wear on her arm. The reverse of the frame is glazed to show plaited brown hair surmounted with the sitter’s initials. Apart from light dust under the glass, it is in fine condition.
