Mother & Daughter

The family resemblance between this young mother and her daughter is clear to see. The artist has chosen a soft autumnal palette to capture the tender moment between them as they gather roses in a garden landscape. The mother’s gaze is direct but the child’s look is shyly averted. The style of the short-waisted dresses dates the portrait to around 1800.

The portrait is signed Mosnier and resides in an ebonised frame with a decorative surround. There is an faded old collection or exhibition label on the reverse. Both frame and portrait are in fine condition.
