In the Shade

John Field

Sold

This bronzed silhouette of a gentleman in a frilled chemise and deep stock comes from the studio of Miers and Field of the Strand and dates to the early 1820s. A master of his craft with many years of experience behind him, John Field was the artist of this piece whilst William Miers, a younger man with less experience, created the frame with its elegantly engineered surround and hanger. Although the two men worked together to create handsome and well-presented silhouettes, theirs was not an altogether harmonious relationship and so the partnership was short-lived.

In fine and fresh condition, the silhouette resides in the original papier-mâché frame backed with an unbroken Miers & Field trade label (no. 1).
