Buckles & Chignon

This lady’s curious hairstyle with its buckles and mass of frizzed curls together with her long chignon must have taken hours to perfect. It was an ideal style for a profile artist to capture and Wheeler has certainly done it justice. Painted on plaster, the base in scratched on the reverse to read T WHEELER / WINDSOR / 1790. It is housed in the original pressed brass-faced frame, the backing board also signed and dated.
