The Pink Mob Cap
Circa 1840
Sold
Several techniques have been used to create this curious little silhouette. The head and dress have been cut in glossy black paper with the chemisette drawn in graphite. Graphite has also been used to add fine detailing to the sleeve and bodice of the dress and to add curls to her hair. As a final touch, the cap and neck tie have been heightened with pink and gray watercolour to give a well-finished and attractive profile.
Unusually slim in size and slightly irregular in shape, the silhouette resides in a period bird’s eye maple veneer frame with a gilt slip. The silhouette has a small mark to the top right corner but is otherwise in fine condition. The frame and slip joints gape slightly with minor losses and cracking to the veneer along the top edge.
