This lady may no longer be in the first flush of youth but she has not lost her flair for style. By 1780, round about when she was painted, ladies’ fashions were becoming less elaborate though nonetheless retained a feminine elegance. Her dress is low-cut and the bodice trimmed with expensive lace. The hairstyles were still carefully coiffured with stiff curls but the height had diminished with the use of more modest padding. Here the powdered hair has been dressed with a lace handkerchief cap tied under the chin with a green ribbon bow to match that on her corsage.

The portrait is in fine condition and is set in the original gold bracelet style frame with an attractive pearl border.
