The Chiselled Nose
Gideon Slous
Sold
It was Beau Brummell (1778-1840) who set the trend for stiffly starched stocks that were sometimes high enough to graze the cheeks. He also established a trend for wearing fitted, beautifully-cut clothes and it was claimed that he took five hours to dress. Whilst this young gentleman may not have taken quite that length of time getting ready, he is nonetheless neatly turned out in a dark green coat with deeply notched lapels worn over a yellow waistcoat with a standing collar, a frilled chemise and a crisp stock.
The miniature is in good condition and is set in a gold fausse-montre frame with blue glass reverse.
Gideon was born sometime before 1771 and was the youngest son of George Selous of Jersey who, after moving to London where Gideon was born, changed his name to Slous. Gideon exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1791 and 1839.
