Henri de Janvry, 1790s

This distinctive profile of a gentleman in a double-breasted coat and pigtail wig is neatly painted en grisaille in pinkish hues heightened with sepia and white against a dark background. It is signed in white under the bust-line – H. de Janvry / 1798. The portrait is set in a gold locket frame that is glazed on the reverse to show plaited brown hair.
Born in France in 1768, Janvry worked in England between 1793 and 1800. He exhibited briefly at the Royal Academy and attracted a distinguished clientele to his studio including royalty.
Good condition; light dust under the glass.
