Captain Richard Hamilton

Royal Artillery

£1,400

This portrait shows Richard Hamilton of the Royal Artillery in a powdered pigtail wig tied en queue with black ribbon wearing a blue coat faced with red and adorned with a gold epaulette.

Born in 1762, Richard was the son of Robert Hamilton MD and his wife Jane Hawkins. Having enlisted in the Royal Artillery, he was promoted to Captain in 1796. The following year Hamilton married Elizabeth Newman and with her had four daughters and two sons. Having for a time lived at Woolwich Common, he later moved back to Norfolk, the county of his birth. He died in October 1837 just one month after his wife’s death.

In fine condition, the portrait is set in what appears to be the original gold-plated frame that is enclosed reverse.
