The Royal Fusilier

Circa 1830

Sold

This portrait was likely commissioned as a keepsake to be sent home to this young officer’s beloved before he set out on campaign. An officer of the 7th Royal Fusiliers, he wears a scarlet coat with gold buttons, high collar and gold epaulettes, the plate on his cross-belt decorated with the rose and crown insignia of his regiment.

The portrait is set in the original gold clasp frame that would have been strung with pearls or with plaited hair to be worn as a bracelet. There is some fading to the face and a small spot of paint loss to the outside edge but otherwise the piece is in good condition.
