Painted Lady

Jane Clark, 1807

Sold

This portrait of Jane Clark was painted in 1807, the era of Grecian-style hair-dos and dresses in sheer fabrics with low neck-lines and high waists. Jane’s lemon dress is edged with lace and accessorized with a floaty wrap draped over her shoulders.

Inscribed with her name and date on the reverse, the portrait is elegantly presented in a papier-mâché frame that has been beautifully painted with Georgian style floral wreaths and swags to complement the delicacy of the portrait.

Reputedly this portrait was purchased by the previous owner at auction in 1953 and subsequently wrapped in tissue paper and stored away unseen for seventy years. Jane is now ready to light up an appreciative new home.
