Pair of Portraits by Johann Werner Kobald

This pair of portraits depicts a gentleman and lady in profile: he in a pigtail wig and toupée with buckles (rolled curls) and wearing a double-breasted coat over a frilled cravat; she, wearing a shoulder cape over her dress, her powdered hair in a banging chignon with long stiff curls.

Pencil and watercolour on card set in gilt-metal mounts with ‘make-do’ ribbon hangers.

Johann Werner Kobold was appointed court painter to Frederic II, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel. He was a member of the Kassel Academy of Fine Arts and painted both oil portraits and miniature portraits as well as local landscapes.
